a must-read for its powerful exploration of power, corruption, and political manipulation, remaining highly relevant in today's world
농장 동물들이 인간의 지배에서 벗어나 평등한 사회를 세우려는 시도를 하지만, 그들의 꿈이 독재적 지도자의 부상으로 부패해가는 과정을 보여주는 우화입니다. 특히 마르크스의 철학과 사상을 기반으로, 계급 없는 사회주의 국가를 약속했었던 20새가 초 러시아 혁명이 어떻게 변질되어 잔인한 독재 정권이 되고 마는지를 여실히 보여줍니다. 뚜렷한 역사적 배경과 비판의 대상에도 불구하고, 여전히 이 책이 ‘고전’으로 꼽히며 널리, 많이 읽히고 있는 것은 그 주제가 보편성을 띄며 오늘의 정치/사회적 역학과 패턴을 반영하기 때문일 것입니다. 단일 민족이지만 우리의 바로 북쪽에서 지금 이시각 행해지는 것들을 봐도 그렇습니다.
시작은 고귀했지만 그들을 억압한 인간들과 구별되지 않을 정도로 그들끼리 불평등한계급을 나누고 노동을 착취하는 돼지들의 모습은 힘과 권력라는 것의 성질에 대해서 생각해 보게합니다. 또 타인의 통제를 위해 언어와, 심지어 기억조차 조작하는 모습은 오늘과 미디어와 레토릭이 어떻게 대중의 인식을 형성하고 권력 유지를 위한 수단이 되는지를 보여줍니다. 결국 그 어떤 경제 원리라도 실질적인 사회/경제적 격차의 지속성은 불가피한 것인지, 격차가 있다 하더라도 그것이 큰 문제가 되지 않는 사회가 가능한지 물을 수 있겠습니다.
지금은 이런 고전이 되었지만 이 책이 출판되기 까지의 과정이 얼마나 고되었는지가 세상과 사람들의 우스꽝스러운 변덕을 새삼 느끼게 합니다.
일전에 오웰의 에세이 전집을 읽고 일종의 부작용을 앓은 적이 있습니다. 한동안 다른 모든 책들이 시시하고 하찮게 읽히는 현상입니다.
