a young girl finds solace, friendship, and healing in an unlikely companion
앞 포스팅의 이유로 Kate DiCamillo 등 아동/청소년 문학 작가들의 책들을 다수 구입하게 되었습니다. 앞으로 수업을 위한 리서치 겸, 또 간간히 비는 시간들을 이용해 즐기기도 할 겸.
위 작가의 첫 작품이기도 한 <Because of Winn-Dixie>에서 역시도 DiCamillo의 다른 작품들처럼 모든 캐릭터들이 어딘지 좀 모가 나고 그들만의 아픔과 상처가 있는 이들입니다. 그들 모두가 각자 가진 다른 스토리에도 불구하고, 아니면 오히려 그렇기 때문에 서로를 이해하고 보듬어줄 수 있는 능력이 있음을 보여주는 따뜻한 이야기입니다. 아물지 않은 상처임에도 용서할 수 있는 힘은 주어진 것을 소중하게 여기고 사랑하는 데에서 올 수 있다는 아주 진부할 수 있지만 부인하기 어려운 삶의 지혜를 보여줍니다. 편한 대로 쉽게 남을 판단하고 타인을 가장 거친 필터로 걸러버려 고립시키는 우리의 고질적 성향에 대해서도 경고합니다.
아동 문학의 고전 중 고전이라 할 수 있는 E. B. White의 <Charlotte’s Web> 중에는 언제 다시 읽어도 가슴을 울리는 부분이 있습니다. 그 부분을 그렇게 느끼는 것이 저 혼자는 아니라는 것을 최근 On Being Project에서와 Ann Patchett과 진행한 DiCamillo의 인터뷰를 통해 알게되어 위안이 됩니다. 늦게나마 아동/청소년 문학을 마냥 가볍지만은 않게 집어 들고있는 요즘입니다.
