"Deeply Necessary"
Homer의 Odysseus가 20년간 집을 떠나 많은 여정을 거치며 다시 돌아올때 보이는 것들이나 Joyce의 Leopold Bloom이 오전에 집을 떠나 더블린 거리를 배회하다 저녁때 집에 돌아올 보이는 것들은 분명 집을 떠나기 전과는 다른 것들이겠지요.
이 회고록의 저자 Michelle Zauner는 보통 사람들이 쉽게 공감할 수 있는 청소년기의 부모와의 갈등을 심하게 겪은 후 집과 떨어져 살다가, 엄마의 갑작스런 병으로 집에 돌아와서 보게되는 것들을 아주 세세하게 기록 합니다. 조건없는 사랑이 가능한 세상의 단 한 명의 인간, 엄마의 죽음을 제일 가까이에서 지켜보며 본인이 “Home”이라고 할 수 있는 곳/것을 다시 정의하고 있습니다. “Home”은 그런 사랑이 존재했던 ‘엄마가 있었던 곳’이며 엄마가 해준 음식들, 엄마가 좋아했던 곳들입니다.
한국인 엄마와 미국인 아빠 사이에서 태어나 줄곧 미국에서 자라면서 자기 정체성 정립에 있어서 역시 혼란을 겪었던 저자는, 이 세상에서 마지막 말이 “아파-“였던 엄마를 그렇게 아프게 보내고 엄마와 같이할 수 없다면 마치 엄마가 되겠다는 듯이 (“If I could not be with my mother, I would be her”), 엄마의 고향, 엄마의 언어, 엄마의 음식을 더 가까이하게 됩니다.
그런 후 삶을 송두리채 삼킨 듯한 슬픔과 상실 뒤에 왔을 법한 성숙함으로, 아티스트로서 큰 인정과 성공을 거두게 된 Michelle Zauner. 그녀의 실제 이야기는 학업이나 직장, 결혼, 출산 등으로 엄마와 떨어져 있는 세상의 모든 딸들, 특히 ‘참 이해하기 힘든’ 엄마이/였지만 갈수록 이해가 되는 모든 딸들, 이제 보고 싶어도 볼 수 없는 엄마를 둔 모든 딸들을, H Mart 에서든 어디서든 한참 울게 합니다.
이 책을 읽는 동안 감기가 걸려 목소리는 안나와도 전화하면 반갑게 받아주는 엄마가, 주말마다 가서 얼굴볼 수 있는 거리에 계시는 게 전혀 당연하지 않고 그저 감사할 뿐입니다.
