“A good story doesn’t just copy life, it pushes back on it.“
2023년 퓰리처 수상작입니다. 작년에서야 겨우 읽게 된 그녀의 또 다른 작품과 마찬가지로 500페이지가 넘어가는 큰 책이기에, 맘먹고 앉아 읽을 수 있는 충분한 시간을 기다리다가 지난 설 연휴에 "지금이지"하고 집어 들었습니다.
Charles Dickens의 가장 자전적인 작품이라는 <David Copperfield>에서 영감을 받아 탄생하게 된 이 스토리는 사실 사회, 문화, 정치적으로 매우 미국적인 성격을 가지지만 등장인물들에 있어, 특히 주인공 Damon이 써내려가는 리얼하고, 거칠면서도 투명한 내러이션이 궁극적으로 부인할 수 없는 인간적인 매력과 한계를 보여주기에 모든 종류의 경계를 넘어 사랑을 받고 있는 듯 합니다.
아무것도 없이 태어난 Damon과 주위에 아무것도 없이, 너무 자주 죽어나가는 주변 인물들 중간에 그들이 겪는 상실과 비극이 그렇게나 더 많을 수 있다는 것이 - “The wonder is that you could start life with nothing, end with nothing, and lose so much in between.” - 정말 신기할 정도 입니다. 그럼에도 그가 느끼는 아픔과 외로움이 공감이 되고 믿을민 한 것은 충분히 그러하고도 남는 현실을 우리가 지금 살고 있기 때문인 듯 합니다. 부모같지 않은 부모마저도 잃고, 가진 것도, 할 수 있는 것도 없는 아이들이 어쨌든 많이 상하지 않은 모양으로 성장하도록 보호하고 지원하기는 커녕 오히려 그들의 노동력을 취해 무엇인가를 얻어내려는 주변이들의 추악하고 잔인함이 완전 새로운 게 아닌 것이 좀 섬뜩합니다.
부조리하다고 표현할 수 밖에 없는 특정 사회 계층의 빈곤, 박한 환경에서 애초의 뜻을 잃어버린 아동복지 관련 기관들, 누구를 위해 굴러가는지를 의심케 하는 미국의 공교육과 의료제도, 오피오이드 과다복용으로 50만명 이상을 죽음으로 내몰면서도 모른척 자기 이익만 추구한 제약회사 등등을 거치면서 Damon과 독자는 일종의 죽음, 아니 어쩌면 그보다 더 나쁜 것을 경험합니다. 작가 Kingsolver는 가까스로 나사로처럼 살아돌아온 Damon과 독자들에게 묻는 듯 합니다: 그래서, 이제는 무엇을 할거냐고. Damon은 그의 대답으로 이 책을 내놓습니다.
1. What might Demon mean when he claims that “the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose”? To what extent is this true? What is a destiny? What’s the relationship between social or economic privilege and destiny?
2. Why is the city so shocking and difficult for Demon? What might it mean that “there was no outside anywhere”? 4. What powers have influenced the economic and industrial history of Lee County and surrounding areas? How have they shaped these characters’ ideas about work, education and self-worth? What does the novel reveal about limited opportunities and structural poverty in Appalachia, and how they are typically interpreted by outsiders to the region?
5. Beyond addiction recovery, what will be involved in Demon’s efforts to build and sustain a healthy life? What does emotional rehabilitation look like? How does a person develop self-worth if they were rarely made to feel worthy?
