"A joyously stirred cauldron of words"
소설과 시 중간 그 어디쯤에 위치한 듯 한 이 작품은 소리와 음악성, 글이 나열된 생김새, 의미가 한데 어우러진 그야말로 언어의 향연이라 할 수 있습니다.
한 마을에 옛 민화로 전해져 내려오는 ‘자연의 신비하고 심오한 힘’을 구체화 한 듯한 Dead Papa Toothwort와 특별한 커넥션을 가지고 있는 듯한 소년, Lanny가 등장합니다.
이 비범한 아이의 실종으로 세간의 이목이 집중되자 마을 사람들이 저마다 한 마디씩 뱉어내는 데에서 우리의 가장 저질적이고 위선적이고 추악한 면을 엿 볼 수 있습니다. 한 소년을 신화적으로 만들어가는 데 모두가 공모하여 스스로를 ‘특별한’ 마을 사람들로 규정해가는 모습에서 우스우면서 무서운 인간적인 면모를 느낍니다. (“What’s grotesque is the ungodly speed of the thing, how quickly a missing child becomes a booming industry.”)
소년이 실종되기 전에는 별 특별하지 않은 것 같았던 일상의 것들이 하나씩 재조명되고 재해석되는 과정에서 드러나는 방관자들의 툭툭치고 지나가는 무신경한 호기심, 남의 일에 대해서는 손가락 하나 들지 않던 사람들이 마치 드라마 속 영웅이 된 것처럼 스팟라이트를 받으며 구조대에 뛰어드는 것을 시니컬하게 바라보는 그들끼리의 불신과 비판과 혐오 (“None of us actually feel anything for anything else. It’s all pretend.”), 시민의 ‘알 권리’를 무기화해 사냥개처럼 뉴스거리를 찾아 킁킁대는 저널리스트들, 시민의 관심과 충격, 클릭 수로 이루어진 미디어 생태계가 왠지 낯설지 않았습니다. 별로 궁금하지 않았던 것들이 풀어지는 미묘한 자극에 충족되지 않는 만족을 느끼면서 계속 다음 기사를 클릭하고 열심히 소비하는 시민으로서 말이지요.
그럼에도 불구하고 보란 듯 순수하게 존재하는 한 소년과 한 중년 남자의 특별한 우정이 참 아름답습니다.
