"... are two quiet friends who see the world differently."
올해 <Panenka>를 읽으면서 경험했던, 사람과 세상에 대한 덤덤하면서도 부드러운 시선이 그리워 Rónán Hession의 다른 작품을 찾게 되었습니다.
단순히 Leonard와 Hungry Paul의 우정을 그렸다고 하기에는 너무 섭섭한 요약입니다. 각자의 독특한 사고와 생활 방식, 삶의 철학을 가지고 사는 캐릭터들이 이들과 가장 가까운 가족, 친구, 직장 동료간의 관계를 어떻게 맺고 살아가는지를 작가 특유의 젠틀하고도 섬세한 시각으로 보여줍니다. 억지스러움이 전혀 없는 순수하고 따뜻함에도 이보다 리얼할 수는 없다라는 느낌을 갖게 해줄 만큼 인간적인 캐릭터들이 오래오래 책의 마지막 장이 오지 않았으면 하는 바람을 갖게 합니다. 무엇보다 Hungry Paul의 독특하면서도 오묘하게 삶을 통달한 듯한 관조적이고 조용한 (그렇지만 또 때론 엉뚱하게 웃겨버리는) 시선이, 마지막 장을 덮은 후에도 잔상에 오래 남았습니다.
겉보기에 참 평범하고 단조롭기 짝이 없는 일상의 모습들에 빛과 관심, 의미를 담아 소박하지만 리얼함에서 깊은 아름다움을 표현해 내었던 17세기의 네덜란드 화가들의 화풍과 많이 닮았다 생각했습니다. 사회적 통념이 거르지 못하는 개개인의 일상과 조용한 개성, 아무도 알지 못하고 알아주지 않아도 젠틀리, 카인들리 살아 숨쉬는 사람들을 오랫동안 생각하고 섬세하고 인간답게 만들어준 작가에게 고맙습니다. Bach를 연주하듯, 복잡한 머리와 마음을 깨끗하게 세탁하고 겨울 햇살에 바삭하게 말리는 것 같은 테라피적인 효과를 경험했으니 말입니다.
올해 출판 예정이라는 작가의 다음 작품 역시 매우 기대됩니다.
