"Achingly tender"
작년 개인적으로 구독하는 팟캐스트중 여러 군데에서 좋은 리뷰로 많이 회자되던 중 퓰리처 수상작이 되어 궁금하던 차에, 페이퍼백으로 발간된 걸 발견하고 최근에 집어들었습니다. 저자와 가족간의 관계, 미국에서 아시아계 이민자로서의 생활과 정체성에 대한 고민, 버클리에서 만난 친구들과 그들과의 특별한 우정, 한 친구의 죽음, 그 뒤로의 슬픔과 죄책감을 포함한 모든 변화에 대해서 공감하기 쉽게 그려진 회고록입니다.
1990년도의 20대들의 문화, 당시 그들이 생각했던 쿨함과 언쿨함이 어떤 것들이었는지, 그들끼리는 어떤 예술과 생활방식이 ‘진정성’있다고 평가하고, 판단했었는지를 재미있게 엿볼 수 있습니다. 즐겨듣는 뮤지션과 음악의 취향에 따라, 또 어떤 철학자들의 책들을 읽는지가 서로를 재고 판단하고 같이 어울릴까 말까를 결정하는 적지않은 무형자산으로 작용했던 2000년도의 저의 대학생활과 20대를 오랜만에 생각해 보게 했습니다. Hsu이 카세트테잎을 구웠다면 저는 CD를 구워 쿨하다고 여기는 음악을 주고받고 하던 시절이었죠. 그 때 매일같이 한데 어울리던 그 친구들과 선후배들이 가졌던 각각의 매너리즘과 캐릭터들, 같이 자주 찾던 여러 곳들을 생각하니 밀물처럼 쓸려온 향수에 하룻동안 젖어있었습니다.
멀리 떨어진 아버지와 아들이 팩스로 편지를 주고 받는 것도 인상적이지만 그 아버지가 항상 편지를 “What do you think?”, “Do you agree?”라고 마무리 짓는 방식이 더 그렇습니다. 그 당시 그렇게 열린 마음으로 회유하려는 아시안계 부모라니-
또 바로 적지 않으면 잊어버릴까봐 친구의 죽음 전에 함께했던 추억과 그 후 그 친구와 함께하지 못하는 것들을 시시때때로 목록으로 적어가는 작가가 이 책을 쓰기 위해 20년간 쌓아온 메모들을 상상해보니 마음이 울립니다. 뉴요커지 등 여러 잡지에 글을 기고하면서도 계속 대학에서 학생들을 가르쳐왔던 저자지만 멱사적으로나 철학적으로 굵직한 이름들을 여기저기 떨구는 것으로 책의 무게를 실으려고 하지 않습니다. 그럼에도 이 책의 모든 내용을 아우르는 생각들의 바탕에 네 명의 인물이 있다면 Aristotle, Derrida, Charles Taylor, 그리고 Edward Hallett Carr입니다.
The lives of the young, he [Aristotle] observed, “are guided by emotion, and they pursue most intensely what they find pleasant and what the moment brings. As they advance in years, different things come to be pleasant for them. Hence, they become friends quickly and just as quickly cease to be friends. For as another thing becomes pleasant, the friendship, too, changes, and the pleasure of a young man changes quickly.”
A friend, he [Derrida] wrote, “would choose knowing rather than being known.”
Derrida wonders, “How to leave him alone without abandoning him?”
He [Taylor] described the outlook as one where “being true to myself is being true to my own originality, and that is something that only I can articulate and discover. In articulating it, I am defining it.” […] Authenticity, Taylor explained, pressures dialogue, and it is born out of engaging with those around us. We seek recognition, even if what you want to hear from a close friend is that you’re a one-of-a-kind weirdo that they’ll never truly understand.
[Carr says] “When we attempt to answer the question, What is history? our answer, consciously or unconsciously, reflects our own position in time” - as well as the future we hope to see. […] The facts of the past are largely indisputable […]. But how these fats are arranged suggests “an unending dialogue between the present and the past.”
Hsu의 시대와 저의 시대를 모두 풍미했던 철학가 Derrida가 말하는, 상호간 주고받음을 전제로 하지 않는 선물의 의미를 생각해 볼 때, 진정한 선물은 결국 과거에 누군가와 함께 했던 시간, 그 기억을 쓰고 있는 현재의 시간, 그리고 우리에게 남아있는 시간이 아닐까 생각합니다. 한 해를 보내고 새 해를 맞는 이 때, 시간의 의미에 대해서 생각해 보기에 완벽한 책이었습니다.
1. Music is a prominent element in Hua’s life throughout the book, influencing both how he sees himself and how he judges others. How does the music he listens to relate to or reflect the events in his life, from childhood to college years? How does he change or incorporate other ways of engaging with society over the course of the narrative?
2. Compare and contrast Hua and Ken’s tastes in pop culture, their approaches to life, and their ultimate fate in the book. What do you make of this unlikely friendship? How does their relationship deepen over time, and how did they end up influencing each other’s lives?
3. Stay True is driven by the author’s desire to remember his friend and reconcile with a senseless loss. Discuss how Hua’s attitude toward Ken’s death changes over time, and what his final reflections on the person he has become suggest about Hua’s connection to grief, nostalgia, and living.
4. As a teenager, Hua is preoccupied with projecting an image of “cool” and crafting a voice and a place for himself in the world. He broods on the idea of authenticity and the promise to “stay true.” What does it mean for Hua to “stay true,” and why did he choose this as the title for his memoir? What is authenticity to you?
