작가들의 작가’라는 수식어가 자연스레 붙는 단편 작가분들이 몇 있습니다. Alice Munro가 그렇고, George Saunders가 그렇습니다. Lorrie Moore 역시 그 수식어가 전혀 어색하지 않은 작가입니다.
Lucia Berlin의 단편모음집을 읽은 바로 후 접하게 된 Lorrie Moore의 단편모음집은 작가의 내러티브와 시각이 참 웃기면서도 슬프다는 면에서 공통점이 있습니다. 그런가 하면 로리 무어는 자전적인 요소보다도, 우리가 길거리에서 마주칠 법한 보통 사람들의 일상과 기억에 엮인 외로움과 아픔을 놀라우리만큼 미묘하고도 정확한 뉘앙스로, 유머러스하게 전달하는 희귀한 능력을 보입니다. 또 지극히 평범한 순간들에서 의미심장한 발견과 다른 묵직한 것과의 연결성을 보여주는 데, 노력을 전혀 들이지 않는 것처럼 자연스럽게 보인다는 것에서 그녀의 문장을 읽는 묘미가 있습니다. 베를린이 좀 더 단도직입적이로 불쾌한 현실을 그대로 보여주는, 더운 입김같은 사실주의에 가깝다면 비슷한, Moore는 그녀의 위트와 아이러니, 재치있는 말놀이들로 좀 더 거리를 둔, 다소 냉소적인 내러티브 목소리를 가지고 있는 듯 합니다.
40여개의 단편작이 들어있는 모음집이라 읽는데 다 읽는데 시간이 좀 걸리긴 했지만 마지막 장을 넘기고는 그녀의 가장 최근 장편인 듯 한 <I Am Homeless If This Is Not My Home>을 들춰보았습니다.
