누군가의 인생에 등장했다가 어느 순간 퇴장하는 사람들.
이렇다 할만한 줄거리 없이, 이 짧은 소설을 초상화 같은 챕터로 나누는 네 명의 인물들.
화자는 열병을 앓으며 그들과의 관계에 대해서,
또 그들이 어떤 사람들이었는지의 윤곽을 작은 디테일을 통해 보여줍니다.
무수한 디테일을 더해 한 인간을 깊게 아는 듯해도, 완전히 알 수는 없으니
짧고 긴 여러 종류의 만남을 통해 겪고, 잃고, 배우게 되는 것은
어떤 면에서 비슷하면서도 다른 것들이겠습니다.
그렇게 삶의 어떠함을 알아가는 중 작고 소소한 것들을 다시 보고
한 발자국 물러나 볼 때, 다른 의미를 찾게 되는 것을 보여줍니다.
책의 끝부분 화자의 일종의 ‘깨달음’에 공감했습니다:
“When I was younger I often thought I should travel more and farther, spend more time in foreign countries, that I should be in a constant state of velocity so that I could get out there and truly live, but with time I have come to understand that everything I was looking for was right here, inside of me, inside the things that surround me, in the money jobs that became my actual jobs, in the constancy of the everyday, in the eyes of the people I meet when I allow my gaze to linger.”
각 인물들에 대한 기억에는 특정한 책들이 있습니다. 그 중 언급된 Paul Auster의 <The New York Trilogy>을 본인도 대학 시절 흥미롭게 읽었던 기억을 떠올렸습니다. 그 때 어울렸던 이들이 진하게 생각나는 중, 폴 오스터의 부고를 뒤늦게서야 알게 되었습니다.
