A lyrical coming-of-age novel that captures the dreams, struggles, and identity of a young Latina girl growing up in a Chicago neighborhood
중학교 여학생들로만 구성된 반이 있어 그들과 재밌고 의미있게 읽을 수 있는 원서를 찾던 중 미리 읽게 된 책이다. “To the Women”이라고 적혀있는 epigraph가 처음 눈에 들어온다.
시카고의 라티노 동네 Mango Street. 거기 낡고 비좁고 엉성하게 지어진 빨간 집을 집이라고 부르는 Esperanza. 경제적으로나 교육적으로 큰 혜택을 받지 못한 환경이지만, 그 어느 곳의 소녀들과 마찬가지로 자신의 정체성을 발견해가며 더 나은 미래를 꿈꾸는 소녀이다. 서문부터 보면 작가 자신과 많이 닮아있음이 보여지는데, 벗어나고 싶은 곳이자, 훗날 다시 돌아올 곳으로의 “고향”의 모습을 잘 보여준다.
Betty Smith의 <A Tree Grows in Brooklyn>이 자연스레 생각날 정도록 캐릭터나 경제적 제약, 사회적 성역할 등 주제 면에서 비슷한 점이 많다. 물론 문자 그대로, 또 상징적인 의미에서의 “자기만의 방”, 여성이지만 인간으로서의 독립성과 선택으로서의 자유에 대한 표현이라면, 우리의 OG 언니, Virginia Woolf의 <A Room of One’s Own>을 빠뜨릴 수 없지만.
