Sejong Book Club #2 토론 주제입니다.
제주도. 하면 최근 그곳의 관광/소비 문화에 대한 어줍잖은 의견이나 내놓을 줄 알았는데 말이지요.
지금의 제주도가 있기까지 그곳을 일구고 지탱해온 해녀들과 그들의 가족의 삶이 역사적 사건들과 엉킨 스토리가 이런 것일 수 있구나 했습니다. 중학교 때 어렴풋이 배우긴 했나? 할 정도로 가물하게 느껴지는 제주 4.3 사건을 살아낸 사람들과 그 후대 세대들에게 대대로 얼마나 깊은 영향을 미쳤을 지, 그 배경과 맥락을 조금 더 이해하게 되었습니다.
식민주의의 유산이라고 할 수 있는 역사적 기억의 트라우마, 질실의 왜곡과 은폐에서 오는 개개인의 아픔과 고통, 과거의 잘못과 죄책감, 그리고 용서의 가능성에 대해서 말하고 있는 책입니다. 용서를 하고 싶어도 할 수 없는 고통을 겪은 이들에게 ‘보상’이나 정의’라는 것이 실현 가능한 것인지, 그것들은 어떤 모양을 하고 있는지. 용서할 수 없는 것을 용서하는 힘은 어디서 오는지 다시 한번 묻게 되었습니다.
이제는 실제로 점점 보기가 힘들어지는 해녀들을 처음으로 가까이에서 보며 해녀들이 바다에 들어갈 때마다 짊어지고 들어가는 위험의 무게가 어떤 것인지 어렴풋이 짐작하게 합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들에게 있어 바다가 어떤 의미인지, 또 우리에게는 무엇을 상징할 수 있는지 생각해 보게 합니다.
이번 주 일요일(9/17)에 있을 Sejong Book Club 두 번 째 모임으로 선정된 책이며, 다음과 같은 주제들을 토론하게 됩니다:
1. How do the haenyeo challenge traditional gender roles and expectations in their society? What roles do they play in their families and communities, and how do these roles evolve over time?
2. The novel follows the lifelong friendship between Young-sook and Mi-ja, two haenyeo with contrasting personalities and experiences. How does their friendship evolve, and how do conflicts and misunderstandings affect their relationship? What does their friendship represent in the broader context of the novel?
3. The novel spans several decades, including the Japanese colonial period, World War II, the Korean War, and modern times. How do historical events and societal changes impact the lives of the characters? What role does cultural tradition play in shaping their identities and choices?
4. The novel also explores the generational divide between Young-sook and Mi-ja and the younger generation of haenyeo. How does this divide manifest itself in the story? What do the different generations represent in terms of the evolving traditions and values of the haenyeo?
5. The story is marked by tragedy and loss, particularly during times of conflict. How do the characters grapple with forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of personal and collective trauma? What do their experiences teach us about resilience and healing?
6. The haenyeo's way of life is closely connected to the ocean and its ecosystem. How does the novel address environmental themes, including the impact of climate change and overfishing on their livelihoods? What broader messages about environmental conservation can be drawn from the story?
7. Young-sook and Mi-ja are not only haenyeo but also Jeju Islanders. How do they navigate the tension between their loyalty to their homeland and the changing political forces?

9. The sea is a central symbol in the novel, representing both the source of sustenance and the source of danger for the haenyeo.
