A tale of hope and destiny, following a boy’s quest to find his lost sister with the help of a mysterious elephant
개인적으로 Kate DiCamillo의 여러 작품들을 아이들과 즐겨 읽기도 하고 추천도 해왔지만 어, 음, 이 책만큼은 잘 모르겠다. 그녀 특유의 상상력과 독특한 캐릭터를, 희망과 용서, 집의 의미, 일상적인 기적과 특별한 기적을 주제로 하는 것은 기존의 작품들과 비슷하나, 어쩐지 몰입이 되지 않는 이유는... 뭔가 지나치게 가공적이고 감상적이고 평면적인 느낌을 부인할 수 없다. 그녀의 문체의 특성상 다른 작품에서도 선택하는 단어들이 늘 평이한 것은 아니었지만, 그런 부담을 정당화하는 캐릭터들이나 플롯의 발전이 잘 보이지 않는데 굳이 이렇게 써야했나- 하는 지극히 개인적인 의견이다.
마침 지난 주에 아이들이랑 C. S. Lewis의 <The Magician’s Nephew>를 마무리했는데, 생각해보면 그 책의 말하는 동물들이 오히려 <The Magician’s Elephant>의 말하지 않는 (하지만 꿈은 꾸는) 코끼리보다 더 ‘그럴 수 있게’ 느껴지는 것이 흥미롭다.

One dark day Peter decides “that it was a terrible and complicated thing to hope, and that it might be easier, instead, to despair”. In what ways is despair easier than hope? Does Peter really believe that hope isn’t worth the fight? Do you?
