a haunting parable of greed, fate, and the illusion of the American Dream, following a poor diver whose discovery of a great pearl brings unforeseen tragedy
식민주의의 영향으로 경제적, 제도적으로 억압을 받고 있는 한 멕시코 원주민 가족에 뜻밖에 찾아온 행운. 겨우 갖게 된 것, 그것이 상징하는 가능성들 - 제도적 인정, 안전의 보장, 자식의 교육 -이 욕망을 일으키고, 안으로는 곧 그것을 빼앗길까하는 두려움과 의심, 불안함으로, 밖으로는 어떻게든 같이 이득을 보려고 하이에나처럼 몰려드는 사람들로 몰리게 된다. 결국 가장 큰 값을 치루고 나서야 뭐가 “행운”이고 아닌지가 잘 뵈는 듯한 캐릭터를 본다.
Beatitude (Matthew 5:3)를 자연스럽게 연상시키며
가난하지만 자족하고 평화로운 것이 낫다
행운처럼 보이는 것이 악의 불씨가 될 수 있다 등의
유행을 타지 않는 교훈을 주는 우화로 보여질 수 있다.
그럼에도, 대부분의 우리가 특권이라고 생각하지 않는
제도적 인정, 안전의 보장, 교육받을 권리 같은 것이 왜 어떤 이들에게는 “허황된 꿈”으로 그려져야 하는 것인지가 어쩌면 Steinbeck이 정말 말하고 싶었던 것일 수도 있겠다.
주변 인물이긴 하지만 책의 초반 의사로 등장하는 캐릭터의 행동이 어떤 면에서 비슷한 양상을 보이는 지금 우리 나라의 뭇 사람들을 연상시켜 씁쓸했다.
Why do some basic rights, like education and healthcare, become sources of false hope for marginalized people? How does Steinbeck criticize societal structure that deny people these rights?
