기회가 된다면 꼭 한번 중학교 1학년 학생들과 같이 읽고 싶은 책입니다.
나이가 들면서 사람이 점점 계산적이고 자기방어적이고 자기합리화에 능해지는 것은 자연스러운 일 같으나, 나이가 많다고 사람이 저절로 지혜롭고 성숙해지는 것은 아님을 보고 느끼게 됩니다. 어떤 특정한 종류의 노력이나 저항이 없이는 말이죠.
멀리서보면 시시하고 하찮을 수 있는 것에 모든 감정을 토하고 갈등과 분쟁을 일으키는 미성숙한 어른들만 주로 보며 자라다 보면 아이들도 또 그렇게 되는 것이 자연스러운 일이 될 수 있겠습니다. 그렇기 때문에 자기보다 더 크고 아름다운 것을 향해 나아가며 성장하는 아이들을 목격하는 것만큼 또 감동적이고 희망을 주는 것도 없는 듯 합니다.
애 키우는 것이 얼마나 힘든지는 직접 해보지 않으면 모른다는 말에 백번 공감하면서도, 자라나는 아이들의 가장 가까이에 있는 어른으로서 할 수 있는 가장 최선의 일은 어른답게 성숙한 삶을 사는 것이지 않을까 합니다. 거기에 Shakespeare와 그것을 권장하는 선생님, 그것을 나눌 수 있는 친구들이 있다면 또 더할 나위 없겠습니다.
