a masterfully woven detective novel where two investigators unravel a seemingly perfect double suicide, exposing a web of deception and corruption
2차 세계 대전 이후 일본의 위계질서를 중시하는 관료적 사회의 면모를 잘 보여주는 탐정 소설이다. 언뜻 보기에 단순한 love suicide로 보이는 사건의 이면을, 용의자가 이용한 기차와 비행기 시간, 지리적 위치로 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 실마리를 하나씩 벗겨낼 때, 결국 예상치 못한 인물이 이 사건의 mastermind로 지목된다.
그렇게 ‘계획된’ 상황과 우연적인 상황의 구별이 뚜렷해지며 모든 퍼즐조각이 들어맞게 될 때 독자가 경험하게 되는 것. 바로 그것 때문에 사람들이 추리 소설을 찾지 않을까. 결국 범행의 동기가 이해되는 것은 수학 문제를 해결한 것과는 좀 다르게 인간의 심리를 보게되는 것이지만 어떤 캐릭터가 무엇을 원하는지, 왜 그것을 원하는지의 답은 대부분 비슷하기에 어쩐지 수학의 상수와 닮아있다.
어쩐지 도망다니듯 책을 읽고 있는 요즘이다. 정말 도망인지는 좀 더 두고봐야 알겠다.
