Join us for our November meeting to discuss Sally Rooney's Intermezzo.
Has anyone else pre-ordered Sally Rooney's latest novel, set to be released in Korea in just a few days? Even if you haven't read her previous works like Normal People, Conversations with Friends, or Beautiful World, Where Are You?, you've likely heard about the popular TV series based on her books. One of the things I love most about Rooney's writing is her almost forensic approach to psychological analysis and her focus on the complex dynamics of modern relationships, especially among young people today. Her keen, penetrating observations of everyday life—capturing the subtle nuances in ordinary moments—are what make her work so relatable and powerful. Her books have given me a window into the thoughts, conversations, and emotions of the current generation, and in that way, they’ve been both enlightening and deeply enjoyable. I'm thrilled to dive into her newest novel and would love to hear your own experiences with reading Rooney's work!

An exquisitely moving story about grief, love, and family, from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties - successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father's death, he's medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women - his enduring first love Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother.
Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined. For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude - a period of desire, despair and possibility - a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.
