Sejong Book Club #18

2024년 12월 19일

We're reading Philip Guston's <I Paint What I Want to See> in the month of February, 2025!

Perhaps it’s something about Sejong itself that has drawn me to books about art and museums over the past few years. The absence of both feels like a haunting presence, as though I were some kind of art connoisseur. Not that I frequented art exhibitions often while living in Seoul, but I did visit theaters, art halls, or museums whenever I wanted to slow things down and reflect. Maybe it’s that time again.

I still dream of seeing Hammershøi’s and John Singer Sargent’s paintings again somewhere in the world. For now, though, I’ll content myself with trying to understand what painters see when they paint. That, in itself, feels like a privilege—far better than having no artwork to admire or no nearby museum to encounter masterpieces capable of transforming how I view life.

If you’re curious and resilient enough to find beauty in the ungainly and unlikely, here's a warm welcome to read this book with me. And I’d be interested in hearing what you see when you look.

Illuminating reflections on painting and drawing from one of the most revered artists of the twentieth century.

"Thank God for yellow ochre, cadmium red medium, and permanent green light"

How does a painter see the world? Philip Guston, one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, spoke about art with unparalleled candour and commitment. Touching on work from across his career as well as that of his fellow artists and Renaissance heroes, this selection of his writings, talks and interviews draws together some of his most incisive reflections on iconography and abstraction, metaphysics and mysticism, and, above all, the nature of painting and drawing.
