10월 Sejong Book Club 토론으로 선정된 책은 노벨 문학상 수상 작가 J. M. Coetzee의 “Disgrace”입니다. 부커 상을 수상한 이 소설은 1999년에 쓰여졌지만 그 주제와 메시지는 현대 독자들에게 여전히 중요한 의미를 갖고 있습니다.
인종, 권력, 성차별, 문화의 총돌 등의 주제를 다루는 이 작품은 논란의 여지가 있는 불편한 주제들을 회피하지 않으며, 특히 오늘의 ‘캔슬 문화’에 있어 미디어에서 보여주는 가해자와 피해자로서의 레이블을 넘어 완전하지 않은 개인들의 삶의 복잡한 측면을 보여주기도 합니다.
에스더어학원은 초중고 학생들의 영어 교육 뿐만 아니라 외국인을 포함하여 대학생 이상의 성인들에게도 원서독서를 장려하고 자유롭게 토론할 수 있는 문학적/문화적 소통과 교류의 공간이 되고자 합니다. 하지만 Sejong Book Club은 본원의 프로그램과는 별개의 것으로, 해당 책을 읽고, 영어로 소통이 가능한 대학생 이상의 성인에 한해 누구나 무료로 참석 가능합니다.
