Garrett Carr의 <The Boy from the Sea>를 읽습니다.
I suspect our last two books may have tilted a little too far toward the highbrow end of the spectrum - works more concerned with form, style, and literary architecture than with the broad pleasures of the contemporary popular novel. For a change, I thought we might travel in the opposite direction.
It seems only fair, every now and then, to consult the collective consciousness - to see what other readers, in their unruly millions, are gravitating toward. My selections for July and August are chosen in that spirit. I want to understand what captured the public imagination and what contemporary taste looks like from the inside, not from a safe critical distance.
Admittedly, I approach both books with a certain ignorance. I know very little about the authors, which means I have the rare pleasure of having no expectations to defend or dismantle. Perhaps they'll be merely entertaining. Or perhaps they'll surprise us. After all, popularity is not the opposite of depth, even if we sometimes pretend it is.
In any case, I hope you enjoy the read. See you in July and August.

Ireland 1973, a baby boy is found on the beach of a close-knit fishing village. Fisherman Ambrose Bonnar offers to bring the child into his own family: his son, Declan, wife, Christine, and up the lane, Christine’s sister and aging father. The townspeople remain fascinated by the baby, now named Brendan, as he grows into a strange yet charismatic young man.
<The Boy from the Sea> tells the story of a family and community, all thrown into turmoil by Brendan’s arrival. The family’s fortunes rise and fall over the years - as do the town’s, because nothing happens to one family here that doesn’t happen to them all - as the forces of a voracious global economy and modernized commercial fishing wreak havoc on their way of life. In the village, Brendan and Declan are wildly different and often wildly at odds; out on the sea, Ambrose worries about his children, but cannot afford to tear his attention from the brutal work that keeps his family afloat. As the world around them keeps changing, the mystery of one boy’s origins pulls them all toward a surprising, stormy fate.
아일랜드 퀸스대학교 시머스 히니 센터에서 문학 창작을 가르치고 있는 개럿 카의 첫 장편소설이다. 작가는 아일랜드 서해안 어촌 마을에서 자라난 자신의 경험을 바탕으로, 그동안 문학에서 충분히 다뤄지지 않았던 바다를 삶의 터전으로 삼아온 사람들의 세계를 정면으로 그려내고자 했다. 그는 인터뷰에서 “이 소설은 자기 감정을 다 알지 못한 채 살아가는 사람들에 대한 이야기”라고 말했다. 나쁜 사람이 아니라, 다만 자신의 마음을 충분히 이해하지 못한 채 관계 속에 서 있는 사람들. 작가는 그들의 서툰 선택과 침묵, 그리고 끝내 등을 돌리지 않는 우리 곁 사람들의 선의를 통해 인간의 본질을 비춘다.
아일랜드 더니골의 작은 어촌 마을. 어느 날 바다에서 발견된 한 아이의 등장으로 마을의 균형은 미묘하게 흔들리기 시작한다. 아이를 집으로 데려온 어부 앰브로즈, 그 결정으로 흔들리기 시작한 가족, 그리고 소문과 기대 속에서 성장하는 한 소년. 이 소설은 20년에 걸친 시간을 따라가며, 한 존재의 도착이 마을의 운명을 어떻게 다시 쓰는지 밀도 있게 그려낸다.
