Virginia Evans의 <The Correspondent>를 읽습니다.
I suspect our last two books may have tilted a little too far toward the highbrow end of the spectrum—works more concerned with form, style, and literary architecture than with the broad pleasures of the contemporary popular novel. For a change, I thought we might travel in the opposite direction.
It seems only fair, every now and then, to consult the collective consciousness—to see what other readers, in their unruly millions, are gravitating toward. My selections for July and August are chosen in that spirit. I want to understand what captured the public imagination and what contemporary taste looks like from the inside, not from a safe critical distance.
Admittedly, I approach both books with a certain ignorance. I know very little about the authors, which means I have the rare pleasure of having no expectations to defend or dismantle. Perhaps they'll be merely entertaining. Or perhaps they'll surprise us. After all, popularity is not the opposite of depth, even if we sometimes pretend it is.
In any case, I hope you enjoy the read. See you in August.

Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.
시빌 밴 앤트워프는 평생 동안 편지를 통해 세상과 그 안의 자신을 이해해 왔다. 거의 매일 오전 10시 30분쯤이면 시빌은 책상에 앉아 편지를 쓴다. 오빠에게, 가장 친한 친구에게, 자신이 간절히 듣고 싶어 하는 수업의 청강을 허락하지 않는 대학 총장에게, 그리고 최근작에 대한 생각을 전하겠다고 조앤 디디온과 래리 맥머트리에게도 편지를 보낸다. 유난히 자주 편지를 쓰는 한 사람이 있지만, 그 편지만큼은 한 번도 부치지 않는다.
시빌은 자신의 삶이 늘 그래왔듯 앞으로도 계속 흘러갈 것이라 믿는다. 어머니이자 할머니, 아내이자 이혼녀, 그리고 존경받는 변호사로서 그녀는 실로 충직한 삶을 살아왔다. 그러나 과거의 한 인물로부터 온 편지들이 그녀의 인생에서 가장 고통스러웠던 시기를 다시 마주하게 하고, 그제서야 그녀는 오랜 세월 써 내려온 그 편지가 이제 읽혀져야 한다는 사실을 깨닫는다. 용서할 마음을 찾기 전에는 앞으로 나아갈 수 없다는 것과 함께.
인생을 온전히 살아낸 사람만이 가질 수 있는 통찰로 가득한 <The Correspondent>는 문학에서 위안을 찾고, 한 번도 직접 만나지 못할 사람들과의 연결 속에서 의미를 발견하는 힘을 그린 보석 같은 소설이다. 이 작품은 젊음의 오만함과 노년의 지혜, 그리고 한 인간의 생애 동안 쌓여 가는 실수와 친절의 순간들을 이야기한다. 시빌 밴 앤트워프가 평생 써 온 편지들은 어쩌면 “아주 사소한 것”일수도 있으나 그녀는 독자들이 만나게 될 가장 오래 기억에 남는 인물 중 한 명일지도 모른다.
