We're reading Elizabeth Bowen's <The Death of the Heart> for our September meeting.
After spending the last few weeks with contemporary fiction, I found myself wanting to step sideways in time and return, for a while, to the literary landscape of the 1930s. This seemed like a good moment to pick up one of those books that has long occupied a place on my shelf, the sort that gathers not just dust but a faint aura of expectation. I can't remember why I bought it, or how it found its way into my possession in the first place. Books have a habit of doing that - appearing in one's life with more confidence than one can account for, then waiting, with extraordinary patience, to be read. If books can also wait to be translated, this one must rank among the most forbearing. It has remained untranslated for nearly ninety years, which is curious enough to make one wonder what, exactly, has kept it in linguistic limbo for so long. Is it simply biding its time, convinced that someone will arrive eventually? Or, less romantically, has no one thought it worth translating?

Elizabeth Bowen is widely considered to be one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century. While her novels masquerade as witty comedies of manners, set in the lavish country houses of the Anglo-Irish or in elegant London homes, they mine the depths of private tragedy with a subtle ferocity and psychological complexity reminiscent of Henry James.
The Death of the Heart, a story of adolescent love and the betrayal of innocence, is perhaps Bowen's best-known book. When sixteen-year-old Portia, recently orphaned, arrives in London and falls for an attractive cad--a seemingly carefree young man who is as much an outsider in the sophisticated and politely treacherous world of 1930s drawing rooms as she is--their collision threatens to shatter the carefully built illusions of everyone around them. As she deftly and delicately exposes the cruelty that lurks behind the polished surfaces of conventional society, Bowen reveals herself as a masterful novelist who combines a sharp sense of humor with a devastating gift for divining human motivations.
