The book chosen for our upcoming November meeting (Nov. 26) is Toni Morrison’s “Jazz”. This novel, first published in 1992, is a literary treasure that invites us to explore not only the complexities of the characters’ lives but also the larger tapestry of American history and culture. As you read through the chapters, you will journey through the streets of Harlem, encountering a story that resonates with themes of love, loss, identity, and the music that breathes life into the narrative.
Set against the backdrop of the Jazz Age, a period of cultural renaissance and artistic expression, Morrison weaves a narrative that is as lyrical and improvisational as the music that inspired it. Her prose is a poetic symphony, painting a vivid and emotional picture of the lives of Joe and Violet Trace and the people who intersect their journey.
I encourage you to engage in our open and respectful dialogue, as we explore the multifaceted layers of "Jazz" together. Whether you're a longtime Toni Morrison fan or new to her work, I believe you'll find this novel to be a compelling and thought-provoking read. Please RSVP to secure your spot via contact.esthers@gmail.com. Admission is free, due to the nature of the discussion, attendance is restricted to individuals of college age and above. Happy reading!
